The Aftermath of War

none stirs
none speaks
in the aftermath of war

two princes
in armor tarnished
sword all but forgotten at their feet

shadows long
flesh quivers
the fading half-light sees me on my knees

you hesitate; i urge:

there is no army
the sun has gone
finish your work
claim your victory

but if it please your highness,
before you leave, do me a kindness --

make sure
                all life
                    is gone
                            from this body
